Steele watched her go and grumbled under his breath. His words werent full sentences, mostly just its of thoughts that were jumping at him at once, and barely made any sense to him. He hadnt heard her comment about him being short tempered for if he had he probably would have just laughed. He couldnt afford to let little comments, no matter how harmless, go unchallenged. If he was to do that he would be leaving himself open for mutiny and chaos, or so he felt. His eyes darted from watching Hevyn to the water pattering on the River and back to her again. Why did he have to worry about one young female being on his territory? Because he was Alpha thats why. Not showing his strength to one would invite an invasion of either more loners or enemy packs. At least, once again, in Steele's mind. Had his brother still been alive he probably been frolicking with the female, maybe even openly flirting, and not having a care in the world. An evil chuckle came to his mind as he thought of the "accident" that had claimed his brother's life. He had been young but Steele could already tell he was going to be a weakling, a problem for the pack and not an asset, and it was best for the pack that he was gone. As for that sister and mother of his, well let's hope the maggots had long ago gotten their fill of their bodies. He didnt believe the ghost stories and other such silly tales that spoke of these poor souls demanding revenge. Those dreams he had almost every night were just that, dreams and not omens like some may feel. But that was all stuff for him to think about later as Hevyn was coming back.
Her words didnt mean anything to him really as she wasnt speaking directly to him. Instead he stretched a bit, realizing that he had gotten a bit cramped up while he had been here. He watched Hevyn and then glanced to the sky. It was still raining pretty hard but the thunder had gotten further away. With a smirk he dashed out of the den and into the water. Once in the water he allowed himself to shift to human form in hopes of stretching out his cramped muscles. Plus the rain didnt bother him so much in the furless form so he settled for that. Steele never considered himself a good looking male in this shape either and kept mostly under the water. Without claws and fangs he felt vulnerable to any attack and kept glancing all around while the muscles slowly relaxed. Once satisfied he shifted back and went back to where he originally was. Maybe at least he could learn some healing techniques if nothing else.

The silence just sort of drawled on and natural sounds like the scraping between two rocks, the dribbling rain that was soon vanishing, and the now distant sounds of thunder; everything seemed silent...Maybe a little too silent. It had seemed to Hevyn that Steele was in deep thought of sorts---it sort of bothered her because as weird as it may sound---she's really not used to the silence treatment.
The sounds of her grinding the two stones together sounded louder and louder with each grind and move of her wrist and the pressure she applied. When she had sneaked a look he had that far-away-to-never-land-and-memories-look and Hevyn wanted to just chuck a stone just for the hell of it. She shouldn't allow this alpha the pleasure of thinking too much in her presence, sometimes it gave them terrible ideas and she wasn't up for battling against those ideas at the moment.
Hevyn went back to her grinding skill and was thinking up a tone to fill the silence when she had reflexively jumped as Steele charged out of the den. She watched his figure, fur stretch and shift into flesh and muscle, then she noted he had submerged himself neck down in chilled water. What she hadn't realized was that she was holding her breath for some time and when she didn't realize, she inhaled sharply.
He was indeed a weird male and she devoted her attention back to the finishings of her medicine. About the time when he had shifted and started coming back she had the ointment done and started slathering it all around the ankle and then she dipped her index and middle fingers in the ointment and sucked on her fingers to absorb the medicine. Hevyn figured she didn't need her human body any longer for there was no other reason to use it at the moment and she shifted back into her multi-hued pelt. Sneezing as she changed, the sneezing fits were going to start and she already knew it. Medicine works different between humans and wolves, she should have remembered that but after seeing Steele in his human, very male form, she was even more aware of her nudity and started feeling uncomfortable for the first time.
Hevyn sneezed again and then stifled the next one. "Steele, do you have a peppersnickle plant in your territory? I'm not sure what you may call the plant but it smells like spices and it's a rather strong smell." Another sneeze was held and she exhaled in a breathless sigh. "I know I'm not allowed elsewhere---but I just need to sniff that plant and it'll rid me of these sneezing fits." Hevyn sneezed even with all her might holding back the sneeze and then she made a little puppy whine as a hiccup filled her throat. She darted out of the den as quickly as three limbs would allow her and dipped her entire head in the water where Steele had just been, lapping up the chilled water. This is bad---hiccups and the sneezes? Maybe I ate too much ointment for my kin body to handle? Well that wasn't uncommon, healers did have a hard time figuring how much to use of what plants. Since her entire head was submerged she had to drag it up and shake the water from her pelt. Maybe that was a rather stupid move but the hiccups were gone...For now.

Steele tilted his head slightly and watched her situation. It seemed to him that her body had betrayed her as she began sneezing and hiccuping. That was one of his deepest fears, to have his body rise up against him in ways like growing older, injured, or weaker. Much better to die in battle in the prime of health and mentallity that to wither away. He really hadnt wanted her to go any further than this area. If he had been a nice mutt he would say it was for her own safety, after all he hadnt let other pack members know she was around and anything could happen, but he wasnt necessarily nice by the usual definitions. He just didnt like the idea of strangers snooping around his home and getting tidbits of information that could back fire on him and his pack. But he couldnt just allow her to sneeze herself silly right? Yah okay he could but nothing would be gained by it.
"Well we can't having you sneezing your cute little nose off now can we?" he said with an honest and not truly heartless smile. "I know where there are a couple plants like that just over that ridge." Steele wasnt a true horticulturist but those plants happened to grow near his beloved mint sprigs. Now that he thought about it he could use a little bit of that himself.
"Shall we head over and get you a whiff? Seems to me like you are going to need help getting over there with you blowing your brains out through your nose." He moved closer to her in case she really did need help but he was still far enough away so that she could be free to run if she felt the need. He even took a few steps towards the flowers so he wouldnt be crowding her. There were times when he allowed himself to not be so arrogant and pushy, these were rare times but this was as close as he got.

Hevyn laughed at how unemotional those words sounded coming from him, she sneezed again and then said, "Well, well, we've got ourselves the crop of the stage." Her words could be misinterpreted but she was mostly calling him an actor of sorts. Stifling back another sneeze she then added, "I admire you're ability to chameleon." Hevyn felt another onslaught of sneezing rebirth itself and she sneezed twice before finishing up what she had in mind. "Really, Steele you don't have to pretend to be nice or polite. What does a meek little lone wolf need kindness or courtesy for? We're 'ruthless beasts' after all and do nothing but 'use those around us'."
With that said she sniffed some air and he did tell the truth about there being the peppersnickles. But when he got close she felt all her muscles tense suddenly, she wasn't sure if it because of the sudden nearness or if she was still embarrassed remembering what his human kin looked like under all that fur. Hevyn had to silence the sudden urge to leap to the side, her ankle was feeling better but not that much better so doing something so urgent as that might cause it to sprain again.
Hevyn had to bite her tongue for awhile, not sure if she should say anything or just welcome his aid through body language. The only time she actually had inhaled deeply was when Steele had moved toward the flowers leaving her some room, she then exhaled and along that exhale another sneeze made it's way. Hevyn wiggled her dark nose and hopped over to the peppersnickle, closing her eyes while she inhaled the spicy scent. She had gone way too close to the flower and it left pollen on her black nose, which made her gently sneeze but at least it wasn't as bad as earlier. She could feel her body responding to it and sighed in relief.
Immediately she dropped to her hunches in an awkward dog sit, her eyes were still closed but she was revealing in the scent and trying to focus on it while it cured the sneezing fits. After doing a short snort, she opened her eyes and smiled a toothy grin at Steele. "Thank you." The sound of her voice startled her because it was soft, gentle, and kind---something she really wasn't used to and it had caught by surprise. Hevyn had to look away from Steele to clear her head, she got up from that sit and started back to the den. What the hell was that just now? I think I sniffed too much peppersnickle.

Steele watched her for a moment before turning his attention to his own plant hunt. Rain dripped down his face, getting into his eyes, and down his fur causng his fur to cling tightly to his body. Hadnt he seen the tender and succulent mint sprigs over this way? As he looked Hevyn's words seemed to float in his mind though he wasnt taking the time to give them any thought, not at the moment anyways. This was a hunt and he was focusing all his attention on his prey. With a sigh he dug here and there as if he were a chicken in search of worms until he finally found what he was looking for. As if he were a pup he let out a yip of excitement and pounced on the flavorful herb as if it was about to fly away from his grasp. A contented grin came across his muzzle as he chewed happily on it while finally taking the time to think over Hevyn's words.
He wasnt really sure why he bothered the whole nice routine. Was there a part of him that actually wanted to be that kind of meek pup? A part of him that just wanted to be able to trust everyone without looking for the attack coming from the shadows? Why didnt he just jump on the female who had indeed invaded the sancity of his home and demand she tell him what she knew? Well there was no real challenge in such brutal tactics really and certainly no fun. To him it was like a chase, something he enjoyed doing even if his belly was full and he had no real hope of out running his meaty morsel. The thrill of the hunt was still there, the challenge of outwitting your prey, and the final satisfying end of it all. But was all of this something he was willing to confide in anyone? After all this tidbit of knowledge was about him and his inner mental workings. Certainly no one should know those things and yet maybe if he could talk them out to one that was of no threat to him or his pack he could make himself stronger mentally.
He growled at himself as he had stood for too long in the rain chewing on his beloved mint. Steele walked casually back to the shelter as if the rain hadnt really been bothering him but his posture said it all, shoulders stooped with his tail dragging and his ears back like a scolded puppy. Upon reaching the dryness of the shelter he decided to answer her. After all if you wanted someone to give you had to be willing to do so as well right?
"I suppose one could say I am being nice in fear of karma since you never know when I could be in your position." he chuckled and puffed out his chest a bit. It seemed his ego wasnt going to let go of it's hold that easily. But he quickly cleared his throat and took on a more conversational tone.
"It could also be said that I want something and in truth I do." Time to try a new strategy, stop the lying and get right to the point. "I am curious to know what you have seen of the other packs and if you have heard of any plans against my own. Certainly a wily creature such as yourself has seen or heard something of interest." he stopped for a minute and scratched at a spot under his chin. Another thought came to him, one that was quite foreign to him but one he went with anyways.
"Then again you might not know anything." a small shrug before continueing "I suppose I just long for some conversation of even a general nature. One that may make me laugh right out loud or sob like a pup. I have always thought that some day a tale would be told about me that would cause such emotions and more in any beast that heard it." Yes that ego was never far away even at his most vulnerable.
